Front and Rear Compound Selection

Competition vehicles do not always require the same Winmax compound on the front and rear axles. The front brakes generally manage a greater percentage of the vehicle’s braking load, while the rear compound must support stability, rotation and overall brake balance.

A higher-friction front pad may be paired with a lower-friction rear compound where excessive rear torque could cause instability or wheel lock. Winmax W2 can also suit the rear axle of selected lightweight front-wheel-drive competition cars where reduced rear brake torque is required.

Final compound selection should consider vehicle weight distribution, tyre grip, aerodynamic load, brake bias, ABS calibration and intended competition format. Advice from the vehicle builder or brake specialist is recommended before mixing compounds.

Street Pads vs Motorsport Pads

Winmax W1, W2 and W3 provide performance from normal road temperatures and are the most appropriate options for vehicles regularly operated on public roads. W3 offers the greatest crossover capability for customers who require both road manners and short-duration competition performance.

W4 through W7 are increasingly competition focused. These compounds may require additional temperature before producing their intended friction and may generate substantially more noise, dust, vibration and rotor wear than a street pad.

WE1 is designed around endurance wear and is not intended to provide the maximum initial bite available from the W6.5 or W7 compounds.

Brake Rotor and Fluid Requirements

Higher-friction Winmax brake pads should be paired with quality brake rotors capable of managing the intended operating temperature. Existing rotors must be checked for minimum thickness, cracking, heat damage, excessive runout and uneven friction deposits before installation.

Performance street and motorsport applications also require brake fluid with sufficient boiling resistance. A high-temperature pad cannot prevent a soft pedal caused by overheated or moisture-contaminated brake fluid.

Dedicated competition vehicles may also require brake ducting to maintain consistent pad, rotor, caliper and fluid temperatures throughout an event.

Bedding New Winmax Brake Pads

New brake pads must be correctly bedded against compatible, serviceable rotors before maximum performance is expected. Bedding establishes an even friction-transfer layer on the rotor surface and helps stabilise the pad material through its initial heat cycles.

The correct bedding procedure depends on the selected compound and intended use. Avoid holding the vehicle stationary with heavily heated brakes immediately after bedding, as this may create uneven material deposits on the rotor.

Allow the brakes to cool properly after the bedding cycle and inspect the system before high-load operation. Motorsport pads should be bedded in a controlled environment before competition whenever possible.

Important Product Information

Available Winmax compounds and pad shapes vary between vehicle applications. Not every compound is produced for every caliper or axle position.

Product images may be generic and may not represent the exact pad shape, slot arrangement, wear sensor or hardware supplied. Confirm the complete Winmax part number and selected compound before purchase.

Brake pads are generally supplied as one axle set unless otherwise stated. Check whether the selected listing is for the front or rear axle and whether additional fitting hardware or wear sensors are required.

Motorsport brake pads may generate substantial noise, dust and rotor wear. These characteristics do not necessarily indicate a product fault and are expected from compounds designed to maximise high-temperature braking performance.
