Wastegate Control Is a Tuning Tool

On a turbocharger with an internal wastegate, actuator preload and spring force influence when the wastegate begins to open. The WGA combines an enlarged diaphragm with a turnbuckle-style preload adjustment and supplied springs. GFB states the supplied configuration uses 5 psi and 7 psi springs installed for 12 psi base pressure, plus a 10 psi spring for alternatives.

The adjustment system allows the installer to match base pressure more closely to the intended calibration. Increasing base pressure can raise engine boost, however, and must not be treated as an ordinary maintenance swap. Professional calibration and verification are required before hard driving.
